New Delhi: The Gayathri Fine Arts, Rohini, Delhi has been doing yeomen service to carnatic music lovers of Delhi. The Sabha recently completed two decades of its existence and one of its aim is to encourage upcoming youngsters in carnatic music. In keeping with this indomitable spirit the Sabha has been holding concerts by young and budding artistes on an annual basis. Like in the past, GFA organized concerts by budding artistes at the India International Centre, Delhi on November 14.
Since the performers are young artistes still in their school, the focus has been on rendition of Krithis. The kriti are those musical compositions that still remain the medium of expressing the beauty and structure of a raga. For majority of audience, the ragalaapana that denotes the bhava of a raga cannot match a well-rendered kriti. The basic format of a kriti comprising pallavi-anupallavi-charanam has remained unchanged. One listens to Vaathi ganapathim bhaje or raghuvamsa sudha tirelessly. This does not mean that one cannot enhance music to higher levels. The emphasis to rendition of krithis is to reassure young artistes that a perfect rendition of a krithi is as enjoyable to a listener as that of a pallavi singing by eminent artistes.

Kum Navanita Krishnan, a disciple of Smt Akhila Krishnan, rendered the krithi Marubalga in raga sriranjani. This was preceded by an outline of the raga. The youngster has the potential but needs to develop breathing control so as to render a performance of longer duration.
Kum. Sneha Krishnamurthy, a disciple of Guruvayoor TV Manikandan came up with a delectable performance. She set the tempo for the programme with the Krithi Padamanabha pahimam in Hindolam followed by raga alapana in Kalyani for the Krithi Himadrisuthe. She has excellent voice and gamakas flowed freely during the rendition of the krithis. The krithi Narayanathe namo namo in Behaag was flawless.
The most satisfying moment of the day came during the violin solo recital by Kum Anusha Sreedher. She is a disciple of Kalaimamani VSK Chakrapani. Kum Anusha gave her debut performance in September earlier this year and her potential was well noticed by the discerning listeners. She stood up to the expectations of the audience during the rendition of Vasudevayani in Kalyani, and the thillana in Mohanakalyani. The raga alapana in Kalyani could have been elaborate instead of beginning and ending abruptly.
The percussionists; mridangam, ghatam and kanjira players, all students of Kumbakonam Padmanabhan gave admirable support that embellished the concerts. AG Subramaniam on the violin gave excellent support. Master Manohar, A Ramakrishnan, Vignesh, Rajesh who played the instruments by rotation helped raise the level of the concerts. Kudos to Gayathri Fine Arts for enabling youngsters to show-case their talent.
